Svaroopa Yoga - a brief overviewSvaroopa means “own form” or “essence”
in Sanskrit. Yoga says that our true form, our essential nature is
consciousness, bliss, limitlessness and expansive
Spinal release – Release the tension in the muscles connected to the spine
It all begins at the tailbone – When you release the tension in the muscles connected to the tailbone, you get changes throughout your entire body.
Support equals release –
this is one of the core philosophies of Svaroopa. We use lots of props,
blankets, blocks, cushions etc. to prop you. One example of this is how
we prop you in Shavasana. When your legs are elevated, your spine can
rest along the floor and the spinal muscles can relax. When you do the
poses, we get you aligned and propped and then the release can begin to
happen on its own.
Stretching vs. release –
Stretching is not what we are looking for in this practice, but a
release of tension in the muscle fibers. So what most people are
looking for when they stretch is a lengthening, however
releasing the tension in the muscles by learning how to soften where
needed and lean into the support of the bones and not using unnecessary
muscles is more effective.
